My Uncle Noel infact quoted that after 44 longs years, the Aguilar Family is in touch again.. And not only in touch, we are now bonded.. Imagine that.

First of all, I would like to commend all of us mothers in the family. We have done so much for our children. And although sometimes we feel bad because at some point we feel we have failed because we often see that our kids' mistakes are our failures. But hey, this is what life has taught me. Our kids' mistakes are their mistakes. Not ours, for as long as we continue to support them in their endeavours. Surely, it will be frustrating but mistakes serve their purpose in life too. They are there for our kids to learn from. Not for us to live in denial and for us to live in shame. Sure there may be people who will judge or criticize, but they are just people.. plain and simple... If they may be part of the extended family, then don't mind them. A family sticks together, and mothers are the glue that binds, not the factor for separation. If other members of the family or the clan does nothing but criticize, then perhaps that person or those persons are not really part of the family.. Not at all...

NANAY PURIE DIED TODAY

Today, our dearly beloved Nanay Purie died of MI, or myocardial infarction. The same heart problem my grandmother Lola Viating died of. I guess it runs in the blood because my father was also diagnosed of MI. Only that his doctor was a good one, and was able to revive him after the attack.

Let this be a lesson as MI is in the blood. We should all take care of our health guys...

Hello guys and gals. It's Christmas time once again and we will again have our annual reunion. How's that for a buzz so all of our relatives will be able to prepare for the coming meet up.. I am sure it will be fun. Now, aside from the reunion, I would like to inform you guys that I shall be using this page already for our family blog. My Diabetic Uncle

Do you have a healthy lifestyle? Do you watch what you eat? Well, you should. Because half of the population are more and more becoming ill due to the intake of food and beverages in our system. My uncle was a diabetic. He died three years ago from the said painful disease. It is sad really. When he was still alive he would always tell us that death is not something to be afraid of, he said it is something that should be welcomed with open arms. And with that thought he just did not care about prolonging his life. Instead of being careful about his intake of sugar or others which the doctors warned him not to take, he took them relentlessly and sometimes, he would hide so as to avoid the gawking eyes of his friends and family. I wish he gave himself a chance to prolong his life. I wish I have read the information from the site I visited sooner, while my uncle was still alive. He would have lived longer.

Anyway, if you have friends or family who are suffering from Diabetes, please visit the site on this link. There, you will find information on how to combat Diabetes parallel to the food intake and the products which are very much helpful to the patient. And I guess to the family in general.

Mom and Dad were watching TV when Mum said, 'I'm tired, and it's getting late. I think I'll go to bed'

She went to the kitchen to make sandwiches for the next day's lunches.
Rinsed out the popcorn bowls, took meat out of the freezer for dinner the following evening, checked the cereal box levels, filled the sugar container and put spoons and bowls on the table.
She then put some wet clothes in the dryer, put a load of clothes into the washer, ironed a shirt and secured a loose button
She picked up the game pieces left on the table, put the phone back on the charger and put the telephone book into the drawer.
She watered the plants, emptied a rubbish bin and hung up a towel to dry.

She yawned and stretched and headed for the bedroom. She stopped by the desk and wrote a note to the teacher, counted out some cash for an excursion, and pulled a text book out from hiding under the chair.
She signed a birthday card for a friend, addressed and stamped the envelope and wrote a quick note for the grocery store. She put both near her purse.

Mum then washed her face with 3 in 1 cleanser, put on her Night solution & age fighting moisturiser, brushed and flossed her teeth and filed her nails.
Dad called out, 'I thought you were going to bed.'
'I'm on my way,' she said.
She put some water into the dog's dish and put the cat outside, then made sure the doors were locked.

She looked in on each of the kids and turned out their bedside lamps and TV's, hung up a shirt, threw some dirty socks into the basket, and had a brief conversation with the one up still doing homework.
In her own room, she set the alarm; laid out clothing for the next day, straightened up the shoe rack. She added three things to her 6 most important things to do list. She said her prayers, and visualised the accomplishment of her goals.

About that time, Dad turned off the TV and announced to no one in particular. 'I'm going to bed.'

And he did...without another thought.
Anything extraordinary here? Wonder why women live longer...?

CAUSE WE ARE MADE FOR THE LONG HAUL..... (and we can't die sooner, we still have things to do!!!!)

Of Culture and Tradition

My grandfather, "Lolo Ninong", was a herbalist. He had a different assortment of mixes and blends of herbal medicine and cures, which he himself organized. He even picked the ingredients personally by climbing mountaintops, visiting caves and swimming oceans and rivers, where some very unique plants thrive. He was a soldier in the Philippine Constabulary, but upon retirement, he focussed on being a herbalist and healer, which he started at a very young age, and even during his service in the PC.

My grandpa belonged to the tribal group "Manobo". Native to Santiago, Agusan del Norte. Being a herbalist and healer already runs in the blood as my grandfather's ancestry were all in the line of healing and magic. Although my grandfather has grown up to be a devout Catholic, who religiously went to church and attended eucharistic celebrations, served and spent his idle time reading the bible, he never forgot his tradition and culture. And with that, I am proud that my grandfather, in his lifetime was never ashamed about being a Manobo.

My mother works for the NCIP. National Commission for Indigenous Peoples. She is in charge of the scholarship grants given to the young hopefuls, all belonging to a specific tribal group. She too, is a proud product of modernization yet, also, proud of being a Manobo.

My sister Denise and I, have been in theater for quite a while and because theater thrives where culture and traditions are hoped to be preserved for the generations to come, we have made a commitment to research and teach what we have learned about our very own culture. She, in the field of theater, and I in education.

Technically, my grandfather is 100% Manobo, my mother, 50% only, since my grandmother, "Lola Berta" was half Chinese and half Hispanic. But because my father also belongs to a tribal group, the Hiligaynon, and is also 50% only since my grandfather "Lolo Peping" was Hispanic,that makes us, sibblings also 50%... We belong to a minority group that is rich in culture and tradition, yet mocked and even humiliated by the ignoramous who thinks that he is better just because he thinks his world is better. A world where my sibblings and I also live in.

My sibblings and I were never in the mountains or riverbanks, where our ancestors lived(we were born and raised and educated in the city) but judging from how they have survived and how descendants continuously thrive, there is not enough reason why the minorities of this country be treated unkindly by the very people who proclaim themselves to be "educated". Most minority groups are abused and used for other people's financial or political gain.

There is a part of myself that is angry because as expected, the minority group's capacity to fight back is too bleak. Not everyone in the tribal communities is educated, and if there are people who have earned a degree of education, even just a Secondary Level Diploma, will no longer go back to the community to teach the children there. Luckily, there are also a few who may not be part of the community, but give unselfishly to help educate the young.

As part of both worlds, I am duty bound to teach my students in the city about the different cultures and traditions of our minority groups. As a Social Studies teacher, I have made that commitment, and I shall not falter. For the future of the preservation of our traditions and culture depends on it. On the other hand, being raised in the city, my knowledge is definitely not enough to be able to give justice to my goal. With research and networking with other people, artists and lumads, I know, this goal will be realized.

In the meantime, I teach my children in school to be open to the idea that culture and tradition can survive even in the modern world. That DOTA and online games, or modern religions, or parties can not, should not, will not get in the way.

Lastly, I challenge each and everyone of you readers to take time and discover your roots, and be proud of the culture and the heritage that goes along with it. Enough with impartial judgment, and wrong optimism. Before the Philippines was colonized, before the coming of the conquerors, we already had our own identity...never ever forget that!!!

Remembering Marivic Mordeno Estrella

Nanay informed me last night that Tita Marivic died on monday this week. I was shocked as she just celebrated her 45th birthday December last year. Although, it was not new to me that she was sick. Yeah, Tita Marivic died of cancer of the cervix. She was a very nice person. All her patients loved her, as well as her family. I had a chance to live in the same building she rented for her dental clicnic, and we saw each other after work and every weekend then. Their family is the best born again family so far...non discriminating, open minded and plain put...adheres to Christian ways. I always wonder why people who are good die early---hmmm....Lance, the youngest is already in College, so Tita's baby is no longer a baby. Tito Ricky may miss her so much, as the two of them are like my parents, a couple that can't seem to live without the other. I used to think of weddings, and I told myself years ago that if and when I get married , Tita Marivic and Tito Ricky should be one of my Ninangs and Ninongs. Haayzzzz.... Wala na xa...

Tita Marivic has done a lot of good in her lifetime, and last night also, Nanay informed me that Tita Marivic is donating her eyes....haaaaaaaaay, si Tita, even in death, ibang tao pa rin ang iniisip nya....Wish there are more people like her on this planet...

Tracing Our Roots---

My father has been trying to research on his family tree, the Abrogueña side as well as the Ergina, the Aguilar as well as the Palomo. For some reason, we are only able to trace for now the Abrogueña line...it's not complete yet though.
